How Thai Massage Works
In the Yoga tradition, it is believed that the natural life force within the human body flows along a network of channels or lines (nadis or meridians). Health in eastern philosophies, is regarded as a state of balance between energies, where all the systems of the body, including mind and spirit, function in harmony with each other. Any disease (dis-ease), aches, pains and stress, are seen as imbalance or disharmony in this flow of energies, causing energy blockages.
Thai Massage works on the main ten energy lines (the Ten Sen). We use hands, feet and elbows to apply pressure to important points along these lines, in combination with gentle stretching. This releases blocked energy and frees the body's natural healing potential, restoring balance, health and harmony. Thai Yoga Massage is a deeply healing and powerful combination of rhythmic massage, acupressure, deep stretching, gentle twisting, energy work and meditation all rolled into one experience.
The Treatment
The patient is treated fully clothed and lies on a futon mat on the floor. They may be put into yoga postures during the course of the massage and in this Northern Thai style there are a lot of stretching movements and also some work given to acupressure. The massage therapist leans on the patient's body using hands and forearms, elbows and feet, to apply firm rhythmic pressure to almost every part of the body.
The massage is suitable for anyone to receive, regardless of body size or flexibility; -the massage therapist includes only the appropriate stretches for each individual person. A full Thai massage typically lasts two hours or more, although an hour or an hour and a half is possible.
